About this directory

Most VPN comparisons rank on a number the vendor supplied. This one scores every service by hand on four things — speed, privacy, ease of use and value — against a written rubric that says what each score has to mean before any service is looked at. You can read the definition behind a score by hovering it, and disagree with it.

Nobody pays to appear here, and nothing on this site is currently an affiliate link. If that changes, the link will be marked as one on the page it appears on, and it will still have no effect on a score — the rubric is applied to evidence, not to a commercial relationship.

Every entry records the date its claims were last checked against a source, and prices and audit dates are re-checked more often than the rest because they are what goes stale first. If something here is wrong or out of date, tell us. An inaccurate directory is worse than a small one.
