Proton VPN vs Windscribe

Very few services let you use them indefinitely without paying. These are two of them, and the free tiers are the reason most people end up comparing this pair rather than any other.

Two free plans that are not trials

Proton VPN's free plan has no data cap and no expiry, and gives you one device and ten countries. Windscribe's covers unlimited simultaneous devices, the same as its paid plan, with a monthly data allowance instead.

The shape of the constraint is the choice. If you want one machine protected forever without thinking about it, Proton's is simpler. If you want every device in the house covered and can live inside a monthly allowance, Windscribe's is more generous.

Neither asks for a card. Windscribe goes further and asks for no email address and no password either, which Proton VPN does require.

Swiss neutrality against a Canadian address

Proton VPN is registered in Geneva, outside every intelligence-sharing agreement, and outside auditors have inspected its servers five years running, most recently June 2026. Windscribe is in Ontario, inside the five-country agreement, and its last outside server review was Packetlabs in June 2024 — past the two-year mark, which matters for a claim about how a service behaves now.

Both publish open-source clients, which is a continuous form of the same assurance and partly offsets the audit gap. Both offer port forwarding, multi-hop, obfuscation and a kill switch that holds.

Windscribe is quicker. Proton VPN is the slowest service measured here to start loading a page, and on video calls that shows. Windscribe also renews at the rate it charged and lets you buy only the countries you use, where Proton's advertised rate roughly doubles when the first term ends.

Which should you choose?

Choose Proton VPN if jurisdiction is the axis you are optimising along, or if a current, repeated audit is what you are paying for. Choose Windscribe if you want unlimited devices, no email address, a lower long-term price, or a connection that starts loading pages sooner.

Both free tiers cost nothing and neither expires, so the sensible move is to run both for a week and let the speed and the device limits settle it.
