These two overlap more than most pairs here: both sell polish, both put an app on a television, and both charge far more in year two than in year one. The differences that matter are one historical and one practical.
Apps for the living room
IPVanish has first-party apps for Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV, with no cap on simultaneous devices. ExpressVPN has television apps too and allows ten devices. For a household covering several screens, IPVanish removes the ceiling that ExpressVPN keeps.
Going the other way, IPVanish has no first-party Linux app — Linux means hand-configuring WireGuard or OpenVPN — where ExpressVPN ships one. ExpressVPN also has a browser extension that works on its own rather than as a switch for the desktop app, and its servers hold nothing on disk and rebuild on restart, which IPVanish's do not.

What each one has been asked, and by whom
In 2016, under previous ownership, IPVanish told Homeland Security it kept no usage information and then supplied a subscriber's name, email address, home IP address and connection times. It has changed hands twice since, and Schellman Compliance examined the claim in February 2025, with the report behind a customer login.
ExpressVPN has no comparable episode, but its evidence is thinner than its marketing: the KPMG review covered the controls on a single day rather than over a period, the apps are closed and have not been examined since 2024, and Kape Technologies owns it along with two rival VPNs.
The British Virgin Islands is outside every intelligence-sharing agreement. IPVanish is a Florida company applying California law, inside the five-country one.
Which should you choose?
Choose ExpressVPN if you want the faster connection, a Linux client, or a jurisdiction outside the intelligence agreements — which is most of the reasons to compare these at all. Choose IPVanish if you need more than ten devices covered and television apps at the same time.
If neither renewal price appeals and the living room is still the job, this is the point to look at what a service with a flat rate offers instead.
