NordVPN vs Hotspot Shield

Hotspot Shield is the clearest example on this site of why a single speed number is not an answer. It is genuinely one of the fastest things here by throughput, and using it does not feel fast at all.

Throughput against the delay you actually notice

Hotspot Shield moved 763 Mbps on the reference bench, second-highest of everything measured. It also added 869 milliseconds of latency, which is what decides whether a page starts loading promptly and whether a call sounds like a call. Those two numbers describe the same product, and the second is the one you live with.

NordVPN is slower on raw throughput and considerably better on the delay, which is why it feels quicker in ordinary use despite the benchmark.

What has been checked, and by whom

No independent audit of Hotspot Shield could be located from the company or from any assessor. For a product whose whole value proposition is that traffic passes through it, that absence is the finding.

Testing also found its kill switch letting unencrypted traffic past during a crash. NordVPN has six outside reviews, most recently Deloitte in December 2025, and a kill switch that holds — though its report is readable only from inside a paid account.

Ownership is worth knowing. Hotspot Shield is owned by Point Wild, which also sells Betternet, UltraAV, VPN360 and a Swedish service, so several apparently separate options come from the same place. NordVPN is registered in Panama, outside every intelligence-sharing agreement; Hotspot Shield is in the United States, inside the five-country one.

On features they are closer than the rest of this suggests. Both have obfuscation and a route into Tor. Hotspot Shield adds streaming support and covers eight device types including two television platforms; NordVPN adds multi-hop, a SOCKS5 proxy and memory-only servers.

Which should you choose?

Choose NordVPN. It has been examined repeatedly by named firms, its protective features behave, and its jurisdiction is outside the agreements — and it feels faster in use despite losing on the headline throughput number.

Choose Hotspot Shield only if raw download speed on a large transfer is the single thing you care about, and you have accepted that nobody outside the company has ever checked what it does with your traffic.
