ExpressVPN sells a connection that feels like it is not there. Windscribe sells control and a price that stays put. Both are quick enough that speed is unlikely to be what decides this, which leaves the two things that usually do.
Paying for polish against paying per country
ExpressVPN is the more finished product. It connects without asking you to configure anything, gets through networks that interfere with VPN traffic automatically, and has apps for televisions and a browser extension that works on its own rather than as a switch for the desktop app. Windscribe has none of the television apps.
Windscribe answers with a build-your-own plan where you pay only for the locations you use, unlimited simultaneous devices on the free tier as well as the paid one, a configurable DNS filter, port forwarding and multi-hop. ExpressVPN has none of those last three. Windscribe also asks for no email address and no password at signup.
Over any long horizon the money is not close. ExpressVPN's introductory rate covers twenty-eight months and then renews at roughly triple; Windscribe renews at the rate it showed you.
How recently anyone looked at the servers
This is where ExpressVPN's case weakens rather than strengthens. Its most recent review, by KPMG in February 2025, covered the controls on a single day rather than over a period, its apps are closed source and have not been examined since 2024, and it is owned by Kape Technologies, which sells two rival VPNs.
Windscribe publishes open-source clients, which is a standing form of the same assurance, but its last server review was June 2024 and is past the two-year mark. Canada is inside the five-country intelligence agreement; the British Virgin Islands is outside every one.
Which should you choose?
Choose Windscribe if you want unlimited devices, port forwarding, or a bill that does not change — which covers most reasons anyone compares these two. Choose ExpressVPN if you want apps on a television, or a connection that is quicker than any argument on this page.
If the ageing audits on both sides are the sticking point, Proton VPN has been inspected five years running and its clients are open too.
